A message from Charlie’s mom:
Perhaps I had better start at the beginning.
I adopt older dogs.
Shelters and rescue groups are overflowing with dogs past that adorable puppy stage. By the time they are 7 or 8, their chances of finding a forever home are slim. So it just made sense that when I decided our family needed – really needed! – a golden retriever, a 10-year-old golden who was about to become homeless landed on my computer screen.
It was an instant love story.
Little did I know then that it also was the beginning of a twisty, exhilarating, hilarious, sometimes heart-breaking, always inspiring journey that would become my life’s work. Because Dougal, that 10-year-old majestic heart-stealer, turned out to be one of the most loving beings I have ever been honored to know. And he, in turn, would lead us to Charlie, an 8-year-old golden retriever who had been dumped by the side of a highway – in Taiwan.
Over the next year, Charlie traveled halfway around the world to reach home. A sweet castaway who shared Dougal’s loving nature and crazy amount of charisma, Charlie went through life making lifelong friends on both sides of the Pacific, from those that brought him food and water, which allowed him to survive long enough to be rescued, to an amazing young woman in California, whose home-grown international rescue cared enough to get an unwanted older dog to safety.
Charlie’s Home is the story of the magic that Charlie and Dougal created over the years, somehow using it to bring everyone else – Bella, Faye, Mollie, Sophie, Luna and now Lilly – home, as well.
Over the coming months, I hope you will enjoy meeting them all here. That’s really Charlie’s Home’s entire mission. There’s nothing to buy, no group to join, no cause to advocate for, nothing you have to do.
It’s simply a place to share the stories of a remarkable community of pups – of all shapes, sizes, ages, temperaments – who would love to be your friend.
